Robert H. Austin

Robert Hamilton Austin (* 1946 in St. Charles , Illinois ) is an American biophysicist .

Life

Austin studied at Hope College in Holland, Michigan and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he received his Masters Degree in Physics in 1970 and his PhD in 1975 . As a post-doc he was at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen . From 1979 he was at Princeton University , where he became an associate professor in 1984 and a professor in 1989.

Among other things, he dealt with fractionation of DNA in microlithographic arrays, the study of energy flow in biomolecules and ultrafast diffusive mixing.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), the National Academy of Sciences (1999), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1998). In 2002 he was head of the Biophysics Department of the APS and in 2003 he was the US representative in the IUPAP .

In 2005 he received the Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize for his fundamental and creative applications of advanced methods of experimental physics in biology and for his ability to convey the excitement of his research to a wider public . In 2008 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . For 2014 he was awarded the Max Delbruck Prize . He is editor of the Virtual Journal of Biological Physics and was editor of biophysics for Physical Review Letters.
