Robert Edward Lee Bullard (born January 5, 1861 in Yongesborough , Lee County , Alabama , † September 11, 1947 in Fort Jay , New York ) was an American officer, most recently lieutenant general .

Life

Bullard graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1885 . He served as an officer in the Indian Wars , the Spanish-American War , the Philippines and Cuba, among others . He was promoted to colonel in 1911 and attended Army War College in 1912 .

After the United States entered the First World War in 1917, promotions to Brigadier General and Major General followed quickly . From December 1917 to July 1918 Bullard commanded the 1st Infantry Division ( Big Red One ), the most experienced association of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). In May 1918 he led the division for the capture of Cantigny , the AEF's first major independent operation. Then Bullard was promoted to Brevet Lieutenant General the command of the III. Corps with which he took part in the Battle of the Marne and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive . In October 1918 he received orders for the newly established Second United States Army with the order to advance on Metz .

After the war, Bullard served in administrative posts until his retirement in 1925. In 1930 he was promoted to substantial lieutenant general on the retired list . In retirement, he served as the longstanding President of the National Security League .
