Robert Swarthe

Robert Postal Swarthe (born September 6, 1942 in Los Angeles ) is an American animator and visual effects supervisor .

Life

Swarthe attended the animation workshop at the University of California, Los Angeles , where the first short animation films such as Don't Panic and Minor Discrepancies (both 1964) were made. He also finished the short animation film Uncle Walt , which was long thought to be a Disney film. Swarthe started working as an animator for the Haboush Company after finishing his studies. This is where the short animation film K-9000: A Space Oddity was made . He also founded his own production studio Robert Swarthe Productions, with which he produced Kick Me in 1975 . For the film, which Swarthe, like other of his films, hand- animated directly on the individual frames of the film strip, he received an Oscar nomination in 1976 in the category of best animated short film .

Swarthe went to Graphics Film, where he increasingly devoted himself to working on visual effects. Here he met Douglas Trumbull , who hired him as head of the visual effects and animation departments for the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind . Swarthe was also responsible for the visual effects in Star Trek: The Film and received his second Oscar nomination for it in 1980, this time in the category of Best Visual Effects . Swarthe's other works were One with a Heart (1982) and The Outsider (1983), both by Francis Ford Coppola . Swarthe lives in New York City .
