Roberto Cessi

Roberto Cessi (born August 20, 1885 in Rovigo , † January 19, 1969 in Padua ) was an Italian historian with a focus on Venetian history , resistance fighter . At the same time he was a politician and member of the Resistancea from 1943.

Live and act

Initially employed at the Venice State Archives and high school teacher, he became professor of economic history in 1922 , and in 1925 professor of medieval and modern history at the University of Padua . He was socio nazionale of the Accademia dei Lincei , chairman of the Deputazione Storia Patria delle tre Venezie and member of the Consiglio Superiore degli Archivi di Stato . He was also a member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti . From 1908 he was a member of the Partito Socialista Italiano , in 1943 he went underground and in the first legislative period of the Republic of Italy he was a member of the Camera dei deputati for the constituency of Verona-Vicenza-Padova-Rovigo.

Cessi edited numerous medieval sources on the history of Venice and its territories. The timeframe of his essays and books ranges from the early Middle Ages to the unification of Italy in the 19th century; he also dedicated a monograph to Martin Luther .

In June 2000 he was reburied in the university grave in the main cemetery in Padua.
