biography

Scully graduated from high school in Switzerland , where his stepfather worked intermittently. In 1963 he graduated from Earlham College in Indiana . He then went to San Francisco State University . In 1964 he took part in protests against the repression of black workers and spent 30 days in prison.

Scully started organizing dance events. He became the manager of the Charlatans and a member of the Dog Family . In 1965 he took over the management of the Grateful Dead, mostly in a team of up to 30 employees. He made the band appearances - including the Monterey Pop Festival , the Woodstock Festival and the Altamont Free Concert - and their first record deal.

In 1984 Scully was fired from the band because of his drug problems. In 1985 he returned for a short time. He later overcame his drug addiction and alcoholism. He moved to Carmel, where he looked after his mother and led a civil life. In 1995 he published his memories of the time with the Grateful Dead (see literature).

Rock Scully died of lung cancer at the age of 73 . He has been divorced twice and it is doubtful whether the marriages were legally valid. His first wife Nicki Rudolph called herself Nicki Scully and made a career as a shaman . His second wife, Carolyne Christie, later married Roger Waters of Pink Floyd . Scully's son Luke from a previous relationship was killed in the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.
