Roger of Andria

Roger of Andria († around 1190) was a Sicilian nobleman.

Roger came from the Norman noble family of the Hauteville . He was a descendant of Drogo , an older brother of Robert Guiskard . Roger was chief judge , legal advisor and comes tabulo of Apulia and the Terra del Lavoro in the Kingdom of Sicily . In 1177 he commanded a land army with Tankred von Lecce , which defended Sicily against the Hohenstaufen troops under the command of Archbishop Christian von Mainz . The Normans suffered a defeat at Carsoli east of Rome .

After Tankred had become king in 1190, Roger began a revolt against him in Apulia, where he was led by the Marshal King Henry VI. , Heinrich Testa , was supported. After he had withdrawn in September 1190, Roger holed up in Ascoli . He accepted Richard's offer to negotiate and was captured by him. Soon after, he died in custody.
