Roland Jaime Orzabal de la Quintana (* 22. August 1961 in Portsmouth , county Hampshire , England ) is an English singer , composer and producer . He celebrated his greatest successes in the 1980s with his band Tears for Fears .

Life

Roland Orzabal grew up in Bath as the middle of three siblings. His mother is English, his father is French with Spanish roots.

Orzabal was married to his wife Caroline for 35 years when she passed away on July 7, 2017. The marriage has two children, Pascal and Raoul. Roland Orzabal was originally supposed to be called Raoul before his mother chose Roland two weeks after the birth.

Musical career

Roland Orzabal played together with his friend Curt Smith in a formation called Graduate in the late 1970s . Since both were dissatisfied with the situation in the band, they formed Elias Tears For Fears together with Ian Stanley and Emmanuel "Manny" in 1981.

After three albums and great worldwide success, Smith left the band in 1990 to continue working solo. As the last remaining member of the band, Roland Orzabal recorded the next two albums alone, before Tomcats Screaming Outside, his first “real” solo album under his own name in 2001 , in which he also processed contemporary electronic music.

In addition to his band activity, Orzabal was also active as a producer, e.g. B. for Oleta Adams , u. a. can be heard on the tracks Woman in Chains and Badman's Song, from the Tears for Fears album The Seeds of Love . In 1999 Orzabal produced the album Love in the Time of Science by Emilíana Torrini , for which he also wrote two songs with Alan Griffith. It was released by One Little Indian Records , Björk's record company.

In 2000 there was a reconciliation with Curt Smith and consequently in 2004 the first Tears-for-Fears album since 1995. Since then, both have been touring together again at irregular intervals.
