Roland Paul grew up in the West Palatinate community of Steinwend and attended schools in Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern . From 1971 he first studied German, history and sociology at the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Education (EWH) in Landau (since 1990: University of Koblenz-Landau ) and completed his studies with the state examination for school service. He then studied German folklore and history at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . After the 2nd state examination in 1978, Paul initially worked as a research assistant at the Pfalz home office in Kaiserslautern, which was later renamed the Institute for Palatinate History and Folklore . Act

Since 1980, in addition to his monographs and editions, there are over 250 articles in books and journals, which mainly represent the result of his historical research. The research focuses on historical facts from the region with the main focus on the Palatinate immigration and emigration movements, the history of the Palatinate Jews, Palatine folklore , house research and the preservation of monuments in the Palatinate .

He did not attract the greatest attention until his retirement, when in November 2016 a small article by him about Friedrich Trump , Donald Trump's grandfather, who emigrated from the Palatinate , appeared in the Bild newspaper and met with great international interest in media such as CNN . The life story of Friedrich Trump and his failed return and expulsion in 1905, which was in the center of interest after the election of his grandson as US President, had already been presented in detail in 2000 in the book The Trumps by Gwenda Blair .
