Political party

Schwanitz joined the New Forum in the GDR in October 1989 and became a member of the newly founded SDP in November 1989 . From 1993 to 2010 he was deputy state chairman of the SPD in Saxony . After Thomas Jurk's resignation after the state elections in Saxony in 2009 , Schwanitz acted temporarily as provisional state chairman of the Saxon SPD until Martin Dulig was elected . He is a member of the steering committee of the Seeheimer Kreis , a conservative working group of the SPD.

Schwanitz is "a passionate, staunch atheist ". Since 2010 he has been campaigning for the establishment of a working group “ Laicists in the SPD ”. He mentions the goals of such a group as follows: "Religious communities and also non-religious groups must enjoy the same ranking and the same esteem in society by the state, but no privilege on one side". He would like to put an end to the “poor position of employees in the church sector. We have special rights there so that the right of co-determination does not apply, we have special rights there with regard to collective bargaining situations ”. He says, "if a third of the population in Germany consists of non-denominationalists who also see this topic, then you have to set up such a working group on equal terms in the SPD". Schwanitz was a sharp critic of the Pope's visit to Germany in 2011 .

MP

Schwanitz was a member of the GDR's first freely elected People's Chamber from March to October 1990. From October 3, 1990 to 2013, he was a member of the German Bundestag .

Rolf Schwanitz entered the German Bundestag in 1998 as a directly elected member of the Reichenbach - Plauen - Auerbach - Oelsnitz constituency and otherwise always via the Saxony state list .

In the Bundestag election campaign in 2005, he gained nationwide attention through a controversial poster motif. Above a photo that showed the coffins of US soldiers who had fallen in Iraq in the hold of a transport plane, he had the statement placed, “She had sent soldiers”. Below that was a call for the election of Rolf Schwanitz. Although he justified the intention of this poster with his criticism of Angela Merkel's attitude to the Iraq war , Schwanitz was exposed to sharp criticism. Among other things, he was accused of bad taste. With the choice of such a motif he exceeded the limits of piety .

For the general election in 2013 Schwanitz did not occur again.
