Rolf Wagenbreth

Rolf Wagenbreth (born June 28, 1929 in Breitenbach ) is a German former colonel of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From 1966 to 1990 he was head of Department X of the Central Enlightenment Administration (HVA), the GDR's foreign intelligence service , responsible for “ disinformation ”.

Life

After elementary school, Wagenbreth trained as an agricultural auditor until 1946. In 1945 he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and after the forced unification of the KPD and the SPD in the Soviet-occupied zone of Germany in 1946, he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). In 1946 he became an employee of the Zeitz City Council . In the same year Wagenbreth went to the German People's Police (DVP) and was first a student, then a teacher at the police school in Torgau .

In 1950 he was employed by the MfS Mecklenburg and used in Department VIIa, responsible for VP readiness . In 1952/53 he attended the SED state party school in Schwerin . He then moved to the MfS district administration in Frankfurt (Oder) , where he became head of the "Political Culture" department and later the operational deputy of the head of the district administration. In 1954 he took over the management of the MfS district office in Beeskow . From 1954 to 1961 he completed a distance learning course at the MfS University in Potsdam and obtained a diploma in social sciences .

In 1955 Wagenbreth became head of department XV of the MfS district administration in Frankfurt (Oder), responsible for international espionage . In 1958 he was transferred to the HVA headquarters in East Berlin and became Head of Division II, responsible for the Western Allies. In 1962 he became deputy head of HVA department VII, responsible for "evaluation and information" and in 1966 head of main department X, responsible for "disinformation". In 1972 he was promoted to colonel. In the same year he was involved in bribes in connection with the failed vote of no confidence in the German Bundestag against Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt .

After the fall of the Wall and the peaceful revolution in the GDR , he was dismissed from the service in 1990.
