Scroll mechanism, path of water molecules shown with blue arrows

Rolled leaves are called plant leaves that have permanently or temporarily curled leaf edges.

purpose

The curling usually happens when there is a lack of water. By rolling up the air humidity is increased locally within the leaf tube and the loss of water during transpiration is reduced.

Occurrence

The common beach grass and steppe grasses show their typical characteristics. Rolled-up leaf margins also occur in many heather plants and in Mediterranean plants such as rosemary and Montpellier rockrose - there as an adaptation to semi-arid locations.
