Romeo Benetti (born October 20, 1945 in Albaredo d'Adige (VR) ) is a former Italian football player .

Career

The central midfielder Benetti came to Serie A at Juventus Turin in 1968 , but was initially unable to gain a foothold at Juve and moved to Sampdoria Genoa for one season, only to make his breakthrough at AC Milan in the 1970/71 season . On September 25, 1971, he also made his debut in the Italian national team , where he quickly became a regular. In 1973 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Milan . A year later he was part of the Italian squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany (three missions / one goal).

In 1976 Juventus Turin looked for a replacement for Fabio Capello and found him in Romeo Benetti. Benetti won two Italian championships with Juventus in 1977 and 1978, and came fourth with Italy at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina (6 appearances / one goal). In 1979 he moved to AS Roma at the end of his career . At the 1980 European Championships in his own country, he finished fourth and played all 4 games. For the national team, he played a total of 55 international matches.
