history

M41 Walker Bulldog as a hard target

After the first soldiers moved into the newly built barracks in 1962, on June 12, 1965 it was given the name "Rommel Barracks".

First the tank battalion 303 and the supply battalion 210 were stationed. In 1971, the 200 Panzer Regiment was set up in the "Rommel Barracks", and in 1975 it was transferred to the 28th Panzer Brigade . In the following years more than 2,000 soldiers were temporarily stationed in the barracks.

From 1993 the repair regiment 21 was based in the "Rommel barracks". After the merger with the supply regiment 22 to the logistics regiment 21 in 1996, the reclassification to the logistics regiment 47, which was based in the barracks until the end of 2014, took place in 2002.

The 3rd Medical Regiment was set up on November 17, 2014 ; this was completed with the setting up of the sixth to ninth companies in mid-2016.

During the terrorist investigations against Bundeswehr soldiers from 2017 onwards, devotional objects of the Wehrmacht were found in the barracks . The name of the barracks after a leading Nazi officer became known to a broad public. Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen tried to rename.

In May 2018, the Federal Ministry of Defense announced that Erwin Rommel would continue to create tradition for the Bundeswehr even after the new traditional decree. Despite his role in National Socialism , Rommel disregarded criminal orders and was close to the military resistance against Adolf Hitler . Therefore "it fulfills the requirements for naming properties of the Bundeswehr."
