Rosa mystica ( Latin for "mysterious rose") is an invocation of the Mother of God in the Lauretanian litany . In the Catholic Church it has long been considered the title of Mary .

origin

As early as the 5th century, Mary, mother of Jesus Christ , was compared by the poet Sedulius to a rose that had sprung from thorns. In the Middle Ages, the symbolism of Mary and allegorical forms of expression in the performing arts and poetry came to the fore. In the Lauretanian litany, which originated from the 12th century and was approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587 , Mary is invoked under this title. With reference to Isa 11,1a  EU , Mary is sung about in the Christmas carol There is a rose sprung from the 16th century as the rice from the root of Jesse , which brings forth the rose of Jesus Christ . Representations of the Mother of God such as the Madonna in the Rose Garden or the Garden of Paradise ( Hortus conclusus ) symbolize the perpetual virginity of the Mother of God . Mary is also invoked as the “rose without thorns” and Queen of the Rosary .

Popular piety

In Austria and other countries, Rosa mystica statues representing the wandering mother of God , which are brought from house to house when carrying women , are widespread . The Marian apparitions of the nurse Pierina Gilli in Montichiari in northern Italy are decisive for this .

In the parish and pilgrimage church of St. Katharina in Swisttal- Buschhoven the miraculous image of the "Rose Madonna" is venerated. The pilgrimage to the Rosa mystica there originated in the high Middle Ages in the nearby Premonstratensian monastery Schillingscapellen , since 1806 the image of grace has been venerated in Buschhoven.
