The approximately five hectare large Rossendorfer pond (also called Nixenteich ) is located north of Rossendorf , a district of the town of Schönfeld-Weißig belonging to Dresden . The federal highway 6 runs north of the water, to the east is the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf , the former central institute for nuclear research of the GDR .

General

Immediately next to the Rossendorfer pond rises the Prießnitz , which flows completely through the pond shortly after its source. Many (especially older) depictions show the source of the Prießnitz directly in the Rossendorfer pond, but according to current knowledge it is located about 150 m further east.

The water has been used for fish farming for a long time, mainly carp . In GDR times, the Rossendorfer pond belonged to the VEB Binnenfischerei Dresden , and some smaller ponds in the vicinity were also used as breeding waters. There was also a duck breeding station at that time. Chicks delivered from the Bärnsdorf hatchery near Radeburg were reared here until they were transferred to a fattening facility . After the fall of 1989 , fish farming was privatized again. Mainly carp, tench and pike are bred.

The Gasthof Schänkhübel is located directly on the Rossendorfer pond . An inn has probably existed here since the 15th century; a document from 1429 mentions a Kretscham , i.e. a tavern, at this point. The actual Schänkhübel was built in 1802 and rebuilt in 1912.

nature

The Rossendorfer pond is surrounded by a belt of reeds several meters wide in places . Various water bird species are native to this area , including mallards and coots . Pond claws and little grebes are also less common. Different types of dragonflies and water frogs live in and around the pond. The eastern half of the pond is surrounded by mixed forest.

Mermaid Island

Mermaid Island

In the middle of the Rossendorfer pond there is a small island called the Mermaid Island . The island has a circular floor plan with a diameter of 15 meters and an area of 177 square meters. According to a legend, a small chapel is said to have stood on the island from 1690, which was dedicated to Saint Barbara . Clergymen from Stolpen and Pirna are said to have held masses and prayer here regularly.

In 1835 a small hut was built on the island to serve as a shelter and shelter for duck hunters. However, only a few remains of this hut could be found at the beginning of the 20th century.

The name Mermaid Island comes from the legend The Mermaid Hill near Rossendorf . In it it is reported that the first Christians in the area often held festivals in nearby Eschdorf . A beautiful young girl who nobody knew and whose dress hem was always soaked regularly appeared at these celebrations . One evening a young man managed to persuade the stranger to accompany her home. She led him to the Rossendorfer pond and touched the water with a rod, whereupon the water in the pond parted and both came to the island in the middle. They spent the night together in the mermaid's house , which she shared with her father. When he came home the next day, the mermaid hid the young man in a baking trough. However, the father smelled the Christians he hated. The mermaid was able to convince him that the house only smelled of Christians because she had been dancing with them in Eschdorf the night before. After the father fell asleep, the young man fled the island. The girl was never seen again. In another tradition, the legend is called The Mermaid Hill near Eschdorf , the lake is known as the Eschdorf pond . These names stem from the fact that the Rossendorf district used to belong to Eschdorf.

Others

In 2012, the Chair of Urban Water Management at the TU Dresden presented a draft of measures within the framework of the Regional Climate Adaptation Program Model Region Dresden (REGKLAM) , which proposed the removal of flowing waters from existing still waters to reduce their warming . This draft planned to relocate the course of the Prießnitz. Instead of going directly through the Rossendorfer pond, the river should get a natural new bed on the southern edge of the pond. The aim of the planned measure was the establishment of the original natural temperature, flow, bed load and structural properties of the Prießnitz.
