The Hanseatic city of Rostock had three different official city flags in its history . The current flag from 1936 is a coat of arms flag that corresponds to the (city) coat of arms . In addition, at the time of the Hanseatic League, the city also had its own (red-white-red) Hanseatic banner on its ships.

The history of the Rostock flag

Although Rostock was neither a free imperial city nor independent of Mecklenburg , the city's merchant ships carried their own flag at least since the time of the Hanseatic League . This right probably went hand in hand with the privilege of free access to the sea, which could be obtained from the princes.

The first evidence received for its own Rostock flag goes back to the year 1418. On the site of the Hanseatic city is explained: "At the time expenditure was red for 44 yards, blue and white canvas for making a flag for a Snike, a Hansisches merchant ship in It is assumed that the shape of this flag, especially the sequence of colors, was based on the Rostock coat of arms. It is therefore interesting that for the symbol of the Rostock ships, the same weighting of the Hanseatic and the princely part in the width of the stripes was probably given up in favor of stripes of the same width, red-silver so still below the princely blue, but in its weight stood confidently about it.

It is also unlikely that Rostock carried its own flag before the year 1323, when Warnemünde acquired it and thus secured permanent access to the Baltic Sea . The Rostock tricolor also became Mecklenburg's sea flag in the second half of the 18th century . Bad Doberan also used it as its city flag before that .

In 1737 at the latest, a new flag appeared in Rostock with a red griffin , rising or striding, on a yellow background. But there is also a report of a white griffin on a red background. In 1803 the city council decided to make it the city's flag in the variant of the black griffin on a yellow background. It is said to avoid confusion with Napoleon's French ships , which were hunted by his opponents during this period.

In combination with the new city flag, the Mecklenburg sea flag is then used by Rostock ships around 1834.

Rostock flags today

The golden flag with a black griffin has only been preserved in the club stands of some of Rostock's sailing clubs. The Mecklenburgische Yachtclub e. V. , the Rostocker Yachtclub e. V. , as well as the Academic Sailing Association of Rostock e. V.

The old Rostock tricolor can be found again as a quote in the flag of the Hanse Sail .

Although the coat of arms is present throughout the city, the actual city flag is hardly to be found there - only in front of a few hotels, on some ships and in allotments. The town hall does not flag with her either.
