The Red Lion with the Red Sun Society of Iran ( Persian جمعیت شیر و خورشید سرخ ایران, DMG Ǧamʿiyat-e šīr o ḫoršīd-e sorḫ-e Īrān ) is the oldest non-profit organization in Iran . In Iran and within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, it performs the tasks of a voluntary aid society , which result from the Geneva Conventions and the statutes of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement .

history

The Red Lion with the Red Sun Society of Iran was founded in 1923 by the doctor Amir Amir-Alam during the reign of Ahmad Shah . The reason for the establishment of the society was an earthquake in Bodschnurd in the province of Khorasan . Amir-Alam, who was director of the health department of Khorasan at this time, obtained approval from Ahmad Shah to found the society in order to be able to recruit voluntary helpers from home and abroad to provide medical care for the earthquake victims. In its founding year, the organization became a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement . The symbol of the red lion with sword and sun, defined under international law, was used as a symbol of the organization until 1980 .

After the Islamic Revolution , the society was renamed the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran . Although the Iranian Red Crescent Society has been using the symbol of the red crescent since 1980, Iran expressly reserves the right to use the red lion with the red sun, which therefore continues to have the status of an officially recognized symbol. The recognition as a trademark was confirmed in the Third Additional Protocol of 2005 to the Geneva Convention .

The symbol and the designation "Red Lion with Red Sun" are protected by federal law in Switzerland and Austria. The German DRK law makes no explicit reference to the trademark or its designation.
