The red-throated lorikeet ( Charmosyna amabilis ) is an extremely rare species of parrot from the genus of charmosyna ( Charmosyna ) formed on the Fiji Islands endemic is.

description

The red panty reaches a size of 18 cm. The plumage is generally green. The chest, abdomen, under wing-coverts and under-tail coverts are yellow-green. The cheeks, chin, reins and throat are lined with red. The throat is marked by a narrow yellow band. There is a dark gray ring around the eye. The iris is yellow. The ear covers are blue-green. The legs and beak are orange. The tail is green on the top with broad yellow tips and olive yellow on the underside. The thighs are feathered dark red.

Occurrence and habitat

The red panty lives in rainforests at altitudes between 120 and 1200 m on the Fiji islands Viti Levu , Vanua Levu , Ovalau and Taveuni .

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of the red boy. It can be found either singly, in pairs or in small groups of 5 to 20 birds. It is difficult to observe because the plumage is a perfect camouflage in the green canopy. The diet consists of nectar, pollen and tree blossoms.

Danger

With a population of presumably less than 50 specimens, the red rose is one of the rarest parrots in the world. The species was last observed and photographed on Viti Levu in 1993 . After an unconfirmed sighting at Tomanivi on Viti Levu in 2001, a search was carried out in 2001/2002, but no more specimens were found. Habitat destruction and introduced black rats have caused the population to collapse. Only two reserves on Taveuni - the Ravilevu Nature Reserve and the Bouma National Heritage Park - offer sufficient protection for the continued existence of the species. Between 2003 and 2008 several search expeditions were carried out in all of the possible reserves, but without success.
