Roy Eric Carroll (born September 30, 1977 in Enniskillen ) is a Northern Irish football goalkeeper .

Career

society

Carroll began his career at Hull City . As a youth player he moved to Wigan Athletic in April 1997 and made his debut for this club in 1998 in the Premier League . Manchester United signed him in July 2001 for £ 2.5million . There he had to deal with the French national goalkeeper Fabien Barthez . With Manchester he won the championship in 2002/03. In the following season, the US international Tim Howard was committed, who replaced Carroll's place Barthez as a goalkeeper. It was not until the 2004/05 season that Carroll was first goalkeeper, but was replaced again by Howard after a few mistakes.

In 2005 he did not renew his contract with Manchester United after he was not given a permanent seat guarantee. Instead, he moved to West Ham United . After two years in London and 31 championship games, he was hired by the Scottish top club Glasgow Rangers in July 2007 . Just under six months later, he returned to England in January 2008 to play for the then Premier League club Derby County . In August 2009 he moved to the Danish first division club Odense BK and signed a three-year contract. In February 2011, Carroll left Odense BK after they signed the German Stefan Wessels , who was not a club at the time . Carroll stated that he wanted to move to his home country, but had previously had to stay in a rehab clinic under a false name due to an alcohol problem.

In January 2011, he completed a test match for the reserve team for Sheffield United against Barnsley, in which he conceded two goals in 25 minutes and was sent off after causing a penalty. Because of this poor performance, he was not offered a contract. He then trained as a trial at third division club FC Barnet , where he was intended as a player-coach. This also failed, although he won the Hertfordshire Senior Challenge Cup in his only game as a coach . In July 2011, the second division Preston North End tested Carroll, who used him in the 7-1 friendly win against Kendal Town FC - a contract offer from Preston was withdrawn at the last minute.

After eight months without a club, Carroll moved to the Greek first division club OFI Crete in the 2011/12 season . After the first half of the season, Carroll guarded the goal of the Cretans in 16 games, he signed a contract with Olympiacos Piraeus. The club dissolved the contract with the Argentine goalkeeper Franco Costanzo, who was only signed in the summer season, and signed the Northern Irish for 18 months. Roy Carroll made his first appearance in the first leg of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 32 against Rubin Kazan : In the 73rd minute he replaced Balázs Megyeri , who had seen the red card after an emergency brake, in goal. The Northern Irishman saved the subsequent penalty and paved the way for the Greek team to make it to the round of 16, thanks in part to their outstanding performance in the second leg.

On August 4, 2014, Carroll moved to the English third division club Notts County . In the first year he played all season games as a regular goalkeeper except for an international break, but could not prevent the club's relegation. In the fourth division he remained a regular goalkeeper, but in the spring of 2016 he was put on the bench for a long time before he returned to goal in the last two games of the season.

National team

Carroll is Northern Ireland international . He played his first international match on May 21, 1997 in Thailand , which ended 0-0. After that, he was only taken into account again in 2000 and was only used sporadically in the following years.

On June 2, 2012, Carroll returned to the national team after a six-year absence in the friendly against the Netherlands . Then he was able to prevail as the new goalkeeper and played all 10 games of the 2012/13 World Cup qualification as number one. He stayed that way in the first 5 qualifying games for the 2016 European Football Championship . Then he lost his place in goal to Michael McGovern . In the squad for the European Championship in France, he was accepted as the second goalkeeper, but was not used.
