The Royal Exhibition Building is an exhibition building in the Carlton Gardens in Melbourne ( Australia ). It served u. a. for the Melbourne International Exhibition , which ran from October 1, 1880 to April 30, 1881. The structure and Carlton Gardens were entered on the Australian National Heritage List on July 20, 2004 and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 .

The building complex was the largest building in Australia in 1880.

The building is of great importance as a typical example of the international exhibition movement from 1851 to 1915.

architecture

The Royal Exhibition Building was built in Victorian style by the architect Joseph Reed . He was influenced by the Byzantine and Romanesque architecture . The Italian Renaissance was also incorporated into the dome, which is very similar to the dome of the Florence Cathedral .

Dimensions

The largest exhibition space in the Royal Exhibition Building is the 152-meter-long Great Hall , which has been preserved in the original, with 7,000 square meters. The gallery of the Great Hall on the upper floor covers 4500 m². Originally, the Great Hall only made up a tenth of the total exhibition space.
