Rudolf Heinrich Paul Blasius (born November 25, 1842 in Braunschweig ; † September 21, 1907 there ) was a doctor , bacteriologist and ornithologist .

Life

The father of Rudolf Blasius was the professor of natural history at the Collegium Carolinum and director of the Ducal Museum Johann Heinrich Blasius . His mother Luise, b. Thiele, (1822–1886) came from a senior forest ranger family from Sophiental in the Peine district in the Wendeburg community. In Sophiental with his grandparents , Blasius also developed his love for nature. His brother Wilhelm Blasius was also an avid ornithologist.

Together with his father, brother, the magistrate Julius von Rhamm (1842–1926) and senior magistrate Adolph Nehrkorn , he loved to roam the home region. These experiences also led to his first published work in the annual report of the Association for Natural Science in Braunschweig with the title The bird world of the city of Braunschweig and its immediate surroundings .

After a few semesters at the Collegium Carolinum, he moved to the University of Göttingen to study medicine and to the University of Zurich at Easter 1864 , but returned to Göttingen at Easter 1865 . Here he was writing his doctoral thesis, in which he examined eggs of various genera with regard to their microscopic shell structure. On January 30, 1866, he passed his exam summa cum laude . Thus he was Doctor medicinae, chirurgiae et artis obstriciae . Medical missions for the military followed. After completing his military service, he continued his medical training in Vienna . In February 1867 he took over an assistant doctor position in Göttingen for a short time. In April of the same year he became an assistant doctor of the Duke Braunschweig Contingent with the rank of lieutenant .

In 1870 he finally became a medical officer in Zabern . Here he also took part in the campaign. He later moved back to Braunschweig and worked as a practicing doctor. After the death of his colleague Dr. Reck, Blasius took over a newly founded teaching position for hygiene at the Technical University of Braunschweig . To prepare for this task, he went to Munich for a few months at Max von Pettenkofer's laboratory . In 1882 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

For his ornithological interest, Blasius always explored the immediate area on all his travels and work. He even climbed Mount Etna on his honeymoon . In 1884, at the first International Ornithological Congress in Vienna, Blasius was elected President of the newly created Permanent International Ornithological Committee, now known as the International Ornithological Committee . In 1900 he became president of the German Ornithological Society .

Blasius died in 1907 of pleurisy . He was buried in the Reformed Cemetery in Braunschweig. His wife Mally (born Hausmann, born October 9, 1848 in Hanover , † November 16, 1930 in Braunschweig ), his parents and other family members also rest there .
