Rudolf Teschner (born February 16, 1922 in Potsdam , † July 23, 2006 in Berlin-Steglitz ) was a German chess player and journalist.

Life

Teschner, a professional technical employee, learned to play chess at the age of eleven with his older brother Hermann and made rapid progress. He was champion of Berlin seven times . In 1942 he won a competition against Friedrich Sämisch 5: 3. In 1946 he took fourth place in Leipzig at the 1st championship of the Soviet occupation zone , which Berthold Koch won. In 1948 he won the Eastern Zone Championship in Bad Doberan . In 1951 in Düsseldorf he was first ahead of Gerhard Pfeiffer in the all-German championship .

The FIDE awarded him in 1957 the title of International Master . At the zone tournament of Berg en Dal 1960 he shared 2nd and 3rd place and thus qualified for the 1962 interzonal tournament in Stockholm , where he managed a draw against Bobby Fischer . He won the Reggio nell'Emilia Christmas tournament in 1963/1964 and 1964/1965 (each divided 1st – 4th). In 1967 he won the B tournament in Monaco and in 1968 he finished fourth in the Bamberg anniversary tournament together with Wolfgang Unzicker and received the prize for the most beautiful game.

In 1992, FIDE awarded him the title of Grand Master Honorary (HGM = Honorary Grand Master). Teschner's last Elo rating was 2295, but he didn't play an Elo-rated game after 1994. It had its highest Elo rating of 2450 in July 1971. Before the Elo rating was introduced, its best historical rating was 2633, which it reached in May 1968.

Teschner's special achievement lay in addition to the tournament game in his publication work. After the end of the Second World War he was the editor of the monthly German chess newspaper . It appeared under his direction from 1950 to 1988, with Kurt Richter supporting him until his death in 1969. As (then the only) editor , Teschner corresponded with a large number of well-known freelancers from all over the world, mostly in their native language. He also looked after the chess columns of the Berliner Tagesspiegel and the Berliner Morgenpost and held numerous adult education courses. A heart attack as a result of the completely surprising suspension of the “Schachzeitung” by the de Gruyter publishing house in 1988 forced him to take a break of several months. He made the decision to rearrange his life all the more happy when he had four grandchildren between 1988 and 1992. Teschner did not participate in major tournaments again, but he did participate in numerous small ones, mainly in his hometown Berlin. He had another negative experience in 2001, when his more than 50 years collaboration with Tagesspiegel was terminated informally and overnight because of the abandonment of the chess section. The “cold” decisions of the two publishers made him primarily through the form; Teschner quickly seized the opportunity, however, to devote himself to the new book projects brought to him, where he particularly enjoyed working on the new editions of some of his older books by various publishers.

In addition to his tournament presence and work for the newspapers, Teschner has published a large number of chess books over the past 50 years . In addition to writing his own works, he revised or translated chess books by well-known authors, mostly world-class players. For this he started using PCs in 1988. At the age of 84, Teschner was still editing chess books for Olms-Verlag. After a stroke in March 2006, however, he had to retire from all activities in May. Rudolf Teschner died on July 23 of the same year.

Teschner was married and had three children. His wife Elisabeth was once Berlin champion and vice-champion several times in the 1960s.

National team

With the German national team, Teschner took part in the chess Olympiads in 1952 and 1956 as well as the European team championships in 1957, 1961 and 1965 and won the Mitropacup in 1976.

societies

Teschner was a founding member of SK Lasker in 1947 and later a member of SV Wilmersdorf , with whom he played in the four-track Bundesliga from 1975 to 1977 and in the 1979/80 season , in the single-track Bundesliga in the 1980/81 season.

Chess composition

Teschner only composed chess problems sporadically. He also knows a study-like pawn ending . His work as editor and author has probably also inspired him to make some contributions in this area.
