This article deals with the sport of rugby union in Switzerland .

The Swiss Rugby Association

The Swiss rugby federation, the Fédération Suisse de Rugby (FSR) was founded in 1972 and is the umbrella organization for the individual Swiss regional associations and clubs in the two forms of rugby XV and rugby 7. The regional associations are:

  • Association Cantonale Genevoise de Rugby (AGCR)
  • Association Vaudoise de Rugby (AVR)
  • Northern Switzerland Rugby Association (NSRV)

The Swiss Rugby Federation is a member of the Fédération Internationale de Rugby Amateur Association Européenne de Rugby (FIRA-AER), the European rugby federation and the international rugby association IRB .

The following rugby competitions are held regularly in Switzerland

Rugby championship men

The men's rugby championship is divided into three divisions in 2017/18, after five divisions in the previous season. So-called Excellence leagues are now being played in the two highest divisions with the 2nd teams from the clubs participating in the respective league.

National League A

The National League A consists of 8 teams, with the best 4 going into the playoffs (KO system) at the end of the season and the winner being this Swiss champion. At the end of the season, the team placed last will be relegated to National League B. The team with the second-worst ranking plays against the second-best team in National League B to maintain the league.

Since this season there has also been an Excellence League with the clubs' second teams.

National League B

Since 2018/2019 the NLB consists of 8 (previously 12) teams.

  • Rugby Club La Chaux-de-Fonds
  • Rugby Club Lugano
  • Ovalie Chablaisienne Monthey Rugby
  • Rugby Club Winterthur
  • Rugby Union Zurich
  • Rugby Club Avusy

Avusy and Lugano reached the play-off final for promotion to the NLA. Bern was the last placed team to go straight to the NLB. Ranking 2018/2019: 1) Avusy, 2) Lugano, 3) Winterthur, 4) Friborg, 5) La Chaux-de-Fonds, 6) Rugby Union Zurich, 7) Monthey, 8) Bern.

National League C

Since 2018/2019 the NLC consists of 8 teams

The current teams (2018/19) of the National League C are:

  • RFC Basel
  • Alba Lausanne
  • Rugby Club Lucerne
  • Rugby Club Schaffhausen
  • Rugby Club Solothurn
  • Rugby Football Club St. Gallen
  • Zug rugby club
  • Rugby Club Würenlos

National League D

Since 2018/2019 the NLD has consisted of 2 championship phases. Preliminary round: Regional groups East and West. Second round: Challenge League with the 6 best teams from the preliminary round. The top ranked 1st team team plays against the last of the NLC for promotion. Second teams cannot be promoted.

Rugby championship women

The Swiss Rugby Championship for women takes place in two leagues.
