Rusmir Mahmutćehajić (born June 29, 1948 in Stolac ) is a Bosnian scientist and politician. He is Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Sarajevo and is co-founder and President of the International Forum Bosnia . Mahmutćehajić was Vice President of the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina . In the early 1990s he was one of Alija Izetbegović's close allies .

Mahmutćehajić studied electrical engineering at the University of Sarajevo (graduated in 1973) and then continued his studies at the University of Zagreb with a focus on the propagation of electromagnetic waves in multi- conductor systems (Masters 1973, doctorate 1979). From 1985 to 1991 he was first professor and then dean at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Osijek . In 1988 he was visiting professor at the Catholic University of Leuven for one year .

Mahmutćehajić has been a professor at the University of Sarajevo since 1995, where he teaches at the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Islamic Theology, with lectures on applied physics and mathematics, in particular with regard to the digitization of complex wave phenomena in the former and the phenomenology of Islam in the latter. Since 1995 he has published almost exclusively on political and religious topics.

In addition to his academic and technical interests, Mahmutćehajić also pursued literary and philosophical interests and published essays and literary fragments. Towards the end of the 1980s, the political situation in Bosnia prompted him to become increasingly politically active. He played an active role in the independence movement in Bosnia and was (non-party) Deputy Prime Minister in the government of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1991 to 1992 and Minister of Energy from 1992 to 1994, where he helped organize the successful defense of the besieged Sarajevo. In 1994 he withdrew from active politics in protest against the "ethno-separatist" views of his previous government partners. B. as President of the International Forum Bosnia for a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious Bosnia as an example of "peaceful diversity" and "difference in unity".

2007 Mahmutćehajić was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter a common word between us and you ( Engl. A Common Word Between Us and You ), the personalities of Islam engl "leaders of Christian churches everywhere." ( "Leaders of Christian Churches, everywhere ... ") (October 13, 2007).

The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought in Amman counts Mahmutćehajić among the 500 most influential Muslims of today.
