Life

Séraphin Olivier-Razali was born in Lyon in 1538. He took the name of his stepfather, Francesco Razali, a nobleman from Bologna .

After studying in Tournon and at the University of Bologna , he was appointed professor there in 1562 and auditor at the Rota Romana in 1564. He was the Pope's representative in Poland at the coronation of Henry III. , Member of the Commission for the Reform of the Gregorian Calendar , Auditor of the Rota and Dean of the Rota under the pontificate of Pope Gregory XIV .

After the end of the Huguenot Wars in France, he intervened to obtain the absolution of Henry IV . At the time of negotiations to obtain this absolution, he was one of the king's strongest supporters. After Cardinal 'Ossat left for Bayeux , he was appointed Bishop of Rennes . In 1602 he renounced his bishopric and was replaced by François Larchivier at his request. In the same year he was elected Patriarch of Alexandria and on June 9, 1604 Clement VIII made him a cardinal. He received the titular church of San Salvatore in Lauro . The following year he took part in the two conclaves of 1605, which successively Leo XI. and Paul V voted.

He was one of the members of the College of Cardinals who were present at the consecration ceremony of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini (the future Pope Urban VIII ) by Pope Paul V in 1606 . A painting commissioned by Federico Ubaldini (1610–1657) for the cardinal shows Olivario, Farnese, Pompeo Arrigoni (1596–1616), Bellarmine and Borghese, Virili and Calamina at this ceremony.

He died on February 10, 1609 and was buried in the church of Santissima Trinità dei Monti in Rome. Contemporary witnesses praised his severity, his great regularity of life and his impeccable morality.

Art patron

Seraphim Razali supported the efforts of men of science, literature and the arts. In particular, he was the protector and friend of the mathematician Marin Getaldić , who dedicated two of his works to him. After his death, the mathematician's daughters received their father's last work, “De Resolutione”, published by the Apostolic Chamber. According to the will of the deceased, this work paid homage to Cardinal Francesco Barberini .

He was also the defender of Jacques-Auguste de Thou , concerned about requests from Rome for the publication of its universal history.

Finally Caravaggio painted his portrait. This fact is reported by the poet Marzio Milesi , but the portrait is lost today.
