The Südfeldsee or Großkaynaer See is a residual open pit lake . It is located south of Großkayna mainly in the Saalekreis and with a smaller southern part in the Burgenlandkreis .

Together with the Runstedter See in the north , the much larger Geiseltalsee and the much smaller Hassesee near Roßbach , it forms the Geiseltal lake complex - a series of lakes, all of which are flooded open-cast mines.

Emergence

The digestion of that pit Rheinland carried out in 1906 by Michel works , until 1945 a major mining company in the central German brown coal district . In 1949 the name was changed to Großkayna open-cast mine . The opencast mine was charred in 1972, until 1978 overburden from the Roßbach opencast mine was flushed. In contrast to the Geiseltalsee and the Runstedter See as part of the Geiseltal lake complex, the lake was flooded as early as the 1980s.

The southern part of the lake was designated as a European bird sanctuary for the post-mining landscape Kayna-Süd with an area of 222 hectares. An asphalt bike and hiking path surrounds the lake, which in part also functions as a part of the Sole, Coal and History bike path .

Battlefield

In 1757 Frederick the Great defeated the French army and imperial army in the area of Reichardtswerbe and Großkayna . This battle went down in history under the name of the Battle of Rossbach . Up until after the Second World War, there were two memorials to this battle on the boundary of the district, in the now flooded area.

tourism

A 12.4 km long circular route leads through the nature reserve created around the Großkaynaer See. Apart from the nature, you can marvel at two herds of wild horses and a herd of wild cows. There are also two towers, each with information boards and a picnic table. There are also several information boards around the lake about the Braunsbedra mining area. From Großkaynaer See there are still paths to Rundstedter See and Geiseltalsee. A sailing club and a surf club can be found on the north bank. On the eastern part of the Großkaynaer See you can sunbathe on several unofficial bathing beaches or go swimming in the lake.
