Southern ridge
The southern ridge is a geologically and geomorphologically related, hilly landscape in Germany and Poland , extending from northwest to southeast , which was essentially shaped in the Saale Ice Age. It represents a system of elements of the glacial series , above all terminal moraines and ground moraines , which were formed especially in the younger phase of the Saale Ice Age, the Warta stage. In Germany, the southern land ridge includes the following main natural spatial unit groups of the large landscape of the North German lowlands and sub-units (from northwest to southeast):
64 Lüneburg Heath (complete; only the significant parts highlighted):
-
High heather
- Harburger Berge , Wilseder Berg , Lüß etc. - see natural spatial structure
-
Ostheide
- especially Drawehn
85 Fläming (complete)
- Partial landscapes (high, low etc.) in the Outline section
84 Lusatian basin and heathland
At least with the landscapes of the Lüneburg Heath, according to recent research, it is assumed that the sands and gravels of these ice-edge layers essentially come from the Drenthe II stage and were formed into mountain ranges. These areas were only locally compressed by the glaciers of the Warthe stadium and otherwise flowed around them.
