location

It is located in the southern part of Gernröder's old town on Schulplatz, to the west in front of the tower of St. Stephen's Church and is entered in the local monument register as an atonement cross .

Design and history

The stone cross was created in the 15th century as an atonement for a crime. According to a legend, it is said to have been erected by Margrave Gero for the murder of 30 Wenden princes . The cross, however, is much more recent.

It was probably designed as a parallel-edged Latin cross. The shaft is very broad, but shows signs of damage. The head and arms of the cross are chipped or badly weathered, so that the former shape of the cross can only be guessed at. The damage is believed to be due to damage rather than weathering. The shape could originally have corresponded to the Blue Bulls cross located in Ballenstedt . At a later time, the inscription atonement cross was applied to the stone .

The cross is made of chalk sandstone and has a height of 105 centimeters, a width of 47 and a thickness of 30 centimeters. The rest of the cross arm is only 21 centimeters thick. At its base it has a cross-section of 48 by 30 centimeters.

Originally the cross was on the upper church path. In the last third of the 19th century it was moved to the Schäferberg. In the 1960s, it was moved to the current location.
