Sławomir Mrożek (born June 29, 1930 in Borzęcin near Kraków , † August 15, 2013 in Nice , France ) was a Polish writer and playwright .

Life

Mrożek studied architecture , art history and oriental studies . Even as a 23-year-old he was a staunch Stalinist and signed an open letter and a newspaper article in which he welcomed the death sentences against three Catholic priests. His first successes in Poland were his work as a cartoonist . In 1957 his first book of satirical stories was published . In 1958 he made his big breakthrough with his dramatic sketch The Police . With that, Mrożek had found his genre : he switched to writing plays that are in no way inferior to his cartoons in their satirical sharpness.

Using the means of absurd theater, he criticizes life in a society that is shaped by the control of the police, a party, the state and its bureaucracy with catchy punchlines. He remained loyal to the theater through which he achieved world fame. He was regarded by the Polish cultural superiors as one of the model intellectuals . In response to the crackdown on the Prague Spring , he applied for political asylum in France in 1968, where he also temporarily settled. Before returning to Poland in 1996, he spent six more years in Mexico . Since 2008 Mrożek has been living in the south of France again.
