Sister Maria-Theresa (French Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles [ sœʁ maʁi teʁɛz de batiɲɔl ]) is a comic series by the French cartoonist and scenario artist Maëster (Jean-Marie Ballester), which first appeared in 1982 in issue no. 74 of the comic - Fluide Glacial magazine was published and was published in six comic albums from 1989 to 2008; four volumes appeared in German from 1991 to 1996.

The protagonist , Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles , a resolute woman with masculine facial features, is a completely atypical Catholic nun who interprets her religion freely, lives out her religiosity in a very idiosyncratic manner and is not averse to alcohol , marijuana or the male gender. In traditional costume and combat boots , she experiences almost real, but mostly clearly surreal adventures, which she survives safely thanks to her fists, her physical robustness, her peasant cunning - and in one case also with God's help.

Genre and presentation

The series currently comprises 6 volumes with 46 episodes on 271 pages. The drawings in volume 1 to volume 5 are in black and white , the entire volume 6 and the covers of all comic albums are colored . The spectrum of the graphic representation and the plot ranges from almost realistic everyday stories in the first four episodes of volume 1 to extremely cartoon-like comics in the following episodes.

The series, which focuses on the humor of youth and adults is created in a quasi-Catholic environment, but the monastery and church environment is Maester as background scenario for his wordplay (particularly puns ), parodies of movies and television series and suchbild like pictures jokes often extend over several panels . In an interview, Maëster explained that he had the idea of Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles while observing an elderly lady in the Métro who would have behaved very unusual for a lady of her age . Situation comedy and humor come from the perception of the contradiction that a person, towards whom one has certain expectations , behaves very differently than one expects of them. This unexpected behavior is also found in other people in the series.

After Maëster Fluide had left Glacial in 2005, the 6th volume of Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles was to be published by Éditions Albin Michel , the publisher of the comic magazine L'Écho des Savanes . When the comic section of the Editions Albin Michel was bought by Glénat , the 6th album was released there under the label "Drugstore".

Her mouth is usually pulled down sullenly, but - especially in the presence of attractive young men - she is also capable of a charming smile and then shows the same body language (turning sideways, bending a foot, playing with her own fingers) as is typical for Oliver Hardy was. Without it being shown directly in the series, Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles also lives out her sexuality, which in her youth led to pregnancy and the birth of a son. As a connoisseur, she loves long sleeps, good food, alcohol in every form (preferably red wine ), joints , cigars ; she likes to ride a motorcycle and Vespa and adores Elvis . Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles acts spontaneously and without any consideration. Mêre Supérieure

Yolande, the Mêre Supérieure ( Mother Superior ) of the convent of the Petites Sœurs du Pardon Excusez-Moi , spends most of the time in her office playing video games, trying to ensure discipline and decency among the nuns. At first she is only irritated and annoyed by the unconventional and disruptive behavior of Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles , but over time it develops into bizarre delusions that culminate in a scenario in which she confronts the nuns subordinate to her one after the other in a manner similar to that in The Name of the Rose . In the subsequent trial against her, she accused Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles of being possessed and of having driven her to these acts. In the guilty verdict, an exorcism with subsequent conviction and punishment in the Ordre cistercien sado-masochiste à Clairvaux is imposed for the Mêre Supérieure . Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles is sent to the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux for the time being, which makes her smile, as this convent is located in the vineyards of Burgundy .

Jesus

The first Jesus is a gardener in the convent of the Mêre Supérieure Yolande. He is a short, sturdy, middle-aged man with hamster cheeks, long sideburns and thick eyebrows, speaks French with a heavy Portuguese accent and wears a beret . As a good son he is happy to have his mother Maria, a governess lady who also speaks with a Portuguese accent, visit him. After Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles leaves the Petites Sœurs du Pardon Excusez-Moi , her contact with this Jesus breaks off.

The second Jesus is a young black, homosexual gardener in the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux convent , the new place of activity of Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles . The Mêre Supérieure there needs its vital energy to create an artificial super-Jesus who is to initiate the long overdue Apocalypse - which Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles can prevent thanks to her knowledge of the Eucharist . He has a longer appearance in volume 6. Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles clashes with the head of a biotechnology laboratory in her “charming” manner, whereupon he turns into a green Hulk-like creature and kills Marie-Thérèse. When she appears before God - in the form of George Carlin - a lengthy discussion ensues. She accuses him of no longer caring for the earth, while he states that he created a paradise for the people, but that they have completely corrupted it. In the end God decides that her death was a misunderstanding and sends her back to earth - in free fall - so that she should continue to preach his word.

Most of the episodes stand on their own, the plot is carried through play on words with corresponding graphic implementation. In Volume 4, the conflict between Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles and Mêre Supérieure Yolande comes to a head in such a way that the monastery is dissolved. From then on, Marie-Thérèse experienced her adventure "sans diocèse fixe" ( without a fixed diocese ).

Perception outside of the series

  • In December 1989, the cover of Fluide Glacial No. 162 showed Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles under the Christmas tree with an open gift box, smiling as she inflates a rubber crucifix . The journalist, writer and politician Bernard Antony, Delegate of the Front National in the European Parliament from 1984 to 1999, sued the magazine, but the lawsuit was dismissed.
  • In his book Fluide Glacial Gotlib ... Et moi, Jacques Diament reports an episode of how his brother met a Mêre Supérieure who knew a “real” Sœur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles .
