The SAFICO building ( Edificio SAFICO ) is a high-rise building on Avenida Corrientes in Buenos Aires , Argentina .
The building was designed by the Swiss architect Walter Möll on behalf of the Sociedad Anónima, Financiera y Comercial (SAFICO). Construction began in 1932 and lasted nine months, and the house was opened in 1934. It is one of a number of modern high-rise buildings in the New Objectivity style in Buenos Aires, including the Kavanagh and Comega buildings .
The house had to comply with numerous new building regulations. This included, among other things, that all new buildings in Avenida Corrientes had to be built a few meters back in order to enable the street to be expanded into a boulevard ( Avenida ). Another building regulation was the Reglamento General de Construcciones (General Building Regulations) adopted in 1928 , which fixed the basic height of the buildings on Avenida Corrientes at 40 meters - in order to match the proportions of the 26 meters wide Avenida Corrientes. Möll had a stepped tower built above the 40 meters.
The building has three basement floors, two with garages for around 70 vehicles and a heating system floor. Above the ground floor there are ten floors in the main building and 15 more in the tower. At the time of opening, the SAFICO building was the tallest residential building in Argentina, as the top three floors comprised a single maisonette apartment. There in the first years the general director of the SAFICO group. In later years, numerous well-known personalities lived in the apartment, including Pablo Neruda in his function as Chilean vice-consul.
Until the 1970s, the SAFICO building was located directly, which was then demolished and in 1979 the headquarters of the Bank of Tokyo - today the headquarters of the OSDE - was partially built on. At the urging of the city government, however, part of the area remained undeveloped, so that a small green area was created, the Plazoleta San Nicolás. Today there is a small guard of the Argentine Federal Police geared towards tourist needs.
Today the SAFICO building is the seat of numerous foreign news agencies.
