It has existed under this name since 1945, but emerged from several associations of the village, which was independent until 1937, whose roots go back to 1867. The soccer team played in the Hessian amateur league for some time in the post-war years. Since some of the players left the club in 1954 and founded 1. FC 04 Arheilgen , the SGA has only played in the divisions of the Darmstadt soccer district.

history

Predecessor clubs

In the course of the 20th century, the following Arheilger clubs were incorporated into today's Arheilgen Sports Association :

  • the gymnastics club 1876 , founded on August 12, 1876, the oldest sports movement in Arheilgen
  • the workers' cycling association "Frisch auf" (founded in 1902)
  • the workers gymnastics and sports club (founded in 1903)
  • the two football clubs FC Olympia 04 and FC Germania 06
  • the strength sports club (founded 1910)

The football clubs FC Olympia 04 (from 1913: FV Olympia 04 ) and FC Germania 06 merged in November 1921 to form the sports association (SpVgg) 04 Arheilgen . On July 30, 1922, today's club premises at the “Arheilger Mühlchen” were inaugurated. In 1933, after the National Socialists banned workers' sports clubs, some of the members of the ATSV joined the sports association. After the municipality of Arheilgen was incorporated into Darmstadt in 1937, the local National Socialists pushed for the merger of the sports clubs into large clubs. In 1938, the GfL Darmstadt was established in the city , and the sports association was still able to refuse to join. In the following year, in 1939, Sportvereinigung 04 merged with the gymnastics club in 1876 to form the sports club 1876 Arheilgen . The club has had its current name since 1945. After the Second World War, all clubs were dissolved, the former clubs in a town or district merged to form sports communities in many places and kept this name. The year 1876 was taken over by the gymnastics club as the founding year, as was the club house in Frankfurter Landstrasse. The sports field Im Elsee came from the dissolved workers' gymnastics and sports club, the area at Arheilger Mühlchen and the club colors blue-white-black from the original sports association 04 .

Soccer

Football was already being played in Arheilgen in 1903, but the first club called "Germania" disbanded the following year after FC Olympia 04 was founded. In 1906 Olympia joined the South German Football Association and in the same year a second football club, FC Germania 06, was established . Both of them did not appear nationally. Only after the merger to form SpVgg 04 Arheilgen in 1921 and the inauguration of the new sports field “Am Mühlchen” - Germania had played at the Main-Neckar train station since 1912 - things started to improve the following year. The district league was reached in 1923/24, and in 1927 the SpVgg Arheilgen played for the first time for promotion to the then top division, the district league. The team failed in terms of sport, but was accepted into the district league Main / Hessen due to a league reform in the 1927/28 season . There you met the neighboring club Darmstadt 98 , defeated them 4: 3 at Mühlchen and left them behind in the final table. As “number 1” in the Darmstadt area, the “Mühlches-Elf” could only call themselves for a short time, because as early as 1928/29 they had to leave the district league as the penultimate in the table, while the “Lilien” rose again in the same year succeeded.

Only after the Second World War could the team, which was now running under the name SG Arheilgen , draw attention to itself again. Two junior employees were mainly responsible for this, namesakes Joseph and Hennes Müller, who had competed for the league eleven since 1937 and 1942 respectively. With his three goals in the 3-1 win over VfR Bürstadt in the playoff on September 29, 1946, the latter ensured that the club was promoted to the regional league Frankfurt-West and thus played on par with local rivals Darmstadt 98 in the following seasons; the derby in the 1948/49 season saw 5000 spectators on the "Mühlchen". The climax of this phase was reached when the SG Arheilgen qualified for the newly founded 2nd League South at the end of the 1949/50 round. In the contract players' camp, however, the blue-white-blacks around the Frankfurt "Charly" Zech could not assert themselves and were relegated to the Hessen League after the first season in 1950/51 . The affiliation to the 1st amateur league did not last long, after the season 1953/54 the SG Arheilgen was also among the relegated here.

The club was now divided on how to go on with competitive football. A group of top performers from the team around Georg Büttner (senior) eventually left SG Arheilgen and founded the football club 1. FC 04 Arheilgen . While the latter quickly developed into a top local talent under coach Otto Heib, who had also stepped over, the SGA continued its downward trend with the descent into the A-class in 1957. In 1962, with the promotion to the 2nd amateur league, the return to the fourth division was achieved, but that was over three years later when the group leagues were re-introduced in Hesse and the SGA clearly missed qualification with a 13th place. The footballers of SG Arheilgen finally said goodbye to the higher-class regional leagues in the 1970s, after the department board had decided in 1972 to withdraw from paid amateur football. Since then, the SGA has only played at the district and district level of the Darmstadt football district. Currently (as of the 2011/12 season) the first men’s team belongs to the eight-class Darmstadt regional league.

Handball

In the 2016/17 season, the first men's team played in the second highest Hessian league, the Landesliga Süd. Relegation followed in the same season. At the moment the team plays in the regional league of the Darmstadt district. The women's team was promoted to the regional league in the 2017/18 season.
