history

The beginnings

In 1946 , Lieutenant Colonel Herndlm West Wien founded handball. On August 29, 1949 , the game began in the 4th grade B of the Vienna handball association. In the following years the team rose to the Vienna league. At that time, the association was doing excellent youth work, which was honored by the WHV in 1954/55.

First successes

After being promoted to the State League in 1962 , he won the Austrian State Championship for the first time four years later. Both the field handball championship and the indoor tournament were won. In 1968 the team again secured the Austrian championship title in the field. In the hall, the Hietzinger took part in the Viennese championship and achieved first place. The section existence as part of Union West Wien ended in 1979. As a result, the independent association Union Handballklub West Wien was launched.

New concept for young talent

Due to the termination of the cooperation with "Schuh Ski" as main sponsor , the club was forced to relegate to the State League B and later to the Vienna League after the 1980/81 season. The chairmen Hein Jungwirth and Walter Pariasek then shifted the focus to youth work, the goal was renewed promotion. As part of the concept for young people, they began to work with various schools in the west of Vienna. From the 1983/84 season Harry Dittert acted as the coach of the men's team. He led the team back to the state league A until the 1986/87 season. In the first season, the Viennese were able to secure relegation with a sixth place. From 1987 Vinko Kandija took over the coaching position. He was able to build on the consistent youth work and in 1988/89 won the Austrian state championship with a young team with an average age of only 21.1 years.

Great success

In the early 1990s , the Hietzinger dominated the first division. So they achieved the championship title in 1991, 1992 and 1993 and the runner-up title in 1990 and 1994. In 1991/92 and 1992/93 they also secured the ÖHB Cup and thus the double. The U21 team was even more successful, having won the national championship six times in a row. The club's greatest international success was fourth place in the EHF Champions League in the 1993/94 season.

Restructuring with ups and downs

In 2000, Ferdinand Hager took over the lead and separated the youth department from the first team. In addition, by losing the Altgasse as a home hall, it became a hiking club. The professional team was able to increase steadily and only failed in 2004 in the league final at Bregenz Handball . In the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 she reached sixth place and thus the top playoff, but did not qualify there for the final series. In the following years the Viennese played every year for relegation to the Handball Bundesliga Austria . In 2007/08 the syndicate had to spend there before participating in the first division again the next year.
