The Saarland Order of Merit is the highest award in the Saarland .

Award

The legal basis is the decree of the Saarland state government on the foundation of the Saarland Order of Merit from 1974; the implementing provisions for the Federal Cross of Merit are applied analogously.

The Prime Minister awards the medal as a "sign of recognition for special services to the Saarland". The order process is carried out in the State Chancellery by the Protocol and Foreign Affairs department. The President of the State Parliament and the State Ministers are entitled to make proposals, and anyone can submit proposals for orders.

The Saarland Order of Merit is awarded in one class (international class: officer). The awards are announced in the Saarland official gazette . As a rule, a state minister hands over the insignia and the award certificate. The entrusted receives a letter of congratulations from the Prime Minister.

The award can be revoked by the Prime Minister if the entrusted person subsequently proves himself unworthy of the award due to his behavior. The same applies if such previous behavior is only known after the award. In this case, the insignia and the certificate must be returned.

insignia

According to Article 2 of the Foundation's decree, the medal is “a blue enameled eight-pointed cross with four arms of equal length and a beveled silver edge. The length of the pair of opposing cross arms is 55 mm. At the intersection of the bars, a silver round shield (diameter 19 mm) with the coat of arms of the Saarland framed by a wreath of silver oak leaves is placed. "

The medal is worn as a cross on the chest. You can also carry a reduced version, 10 mm wide, in which a crowned lion is depicted instead of the Saarland coat of arms, analogous to the small state seal.

The mark of the order becomes the property of the borrower and does not have to be returned by his heirs after his death.
