Seed farms

The seed breeding companies in Germany are " copyright " protected owners of the plant varieties approved for sale by the Bundessortenamt , who are obliged to maintain the varieties in their phenotypic description and genetic quality through suitable breeding measures . They earn income through direct sales of seeds and license income from seed propagation or through fees for the reproduction of their varieties.

The traditional seed breeding farms are based on earlier farms in Germany and were represented by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) from 1886 to 1907 , and have been organized by their own association since then. Today the Federal Association of German Plant Breeders represents the seed breeding companies in Bonn with regard to the regulation of the seed trade, quality monitoring and legislative procedures. Internationally, with regard to plant variety protection and patent law , the seed breeding companies are united in UPOV (Union internationale pour la protection des obtentions végétales) Geneva; the quality criteria of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) apply to the international seed trade .

In the past few years, several new seed farms have been founded with the special aim of preserving the old local varieties. Through these initiatives, more and more old line varieties are to be specifically bred and preserved.
