Saffet Arıkan (* 1888 in Erzincan ; † November 26, 1947 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician and diplomat.

Life

Arıkan graduated from the Military Academy in 1910 . After a short stay in Yemen , he worked at the military headquarters in Istanbul. In 1915 he fought in the Battle of Gallipoli . He then served in Baghdad and Baku. After the First World War, Arıkan joined the Turkish national movement around Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the Turkish Liberation War . Then he was briefly military attaché of the newly founded Turkey in Moscow.

On August 8, 1923, he was elected a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and was re-elected in subsequent legislative terms. Between 1925 and 1931 he was also general secretary of Ataturks Cumhuriyet Ḫalk Fırkası . He was Education Minister in the eighth , ninth and tenth governments of Turkey and defense minister in the twelfth government . Between 1942 and 1944 he was the Turkish ambassador to Germany.

Arıkan is one of the pioneers of the village institutes (Turkish: Köy Enstitüleri ) for the training of teachers. These were devised by the later education minister Hasan Ali Yücel , but their forerunners, the “village trainers” (Turkish: Köy Eğitmeni ), were sent to the villages in 1936 during his term in office.

Saffet Arıkan was president of the influential "Institute for the Turkish Language" ( Türk Dil Kurumu ) from 1935 to 1938 .

Arıkan died in Istanbul on November 26, 1947.
