The Safir 74 , T-72Z or T-72z is a main battle tank developed in Iran that is essentially an upgraded version of the Soviet T-54 , T-55 and the Chinese Type 59 . The three models mentioned are used in large numbers by the armed forces of Iran .

The tank has nothing in common with the Soviet T-72 . The designation Safir 74 is used as a designation for former T-54, T-72Z for former T-55 and T-72z for former Type 59 tanks.

modernization

According to Iranian sources, various things have been modernized compared to the basic models.

The 100 mm D-10T cannon was replaced by an Iranian copy of the 105 mm M68 cannon and the stabilization of the cannon is said to have been improved. The tank has a Slovenian EFCS-3 fire control system, renewed electronic and hydraulic systems and a new gearbox that allows automatic or semi-automatic shifting. In addition, the engine was replaced with a more powerful 780 hp model to increase mobility. The hull and the turret were provided with reactive armor on the front and sides in order to achieve better protection, in particular from being hit by mobile anti-tank weapons.
