Saimir Pirgu (born September 23, 1981 in Elbasan ) is an Albanian - Italian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Saimir Pirgu first studied violin in his hometown of Elbasan in central Albania. From 2000 he studied singing at the “Claudio Monteverdi” Conservatory in Bolzano with Vito Maria Brunetti , who is still his singing teacher. In Bolzano, Pirgu met Luciano Pavarotti , who coached him vocally and worked with him on many roles in his repertoire. Pirgu was discovered by Claudio Abbado , who invited him to Ferrara in 2003 as Ferrando in a production of Così fan tutte that he directed .

Pirgu has made guest appearances on stages and concert stages such as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera , the Royal Opera House London, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Vienna State Opera , the Gran Teatre del Liceu , the Bolshoi Theater Moscow, the State Opera Unter den Linden and Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Salzburg Festival n, the Vienna Musikverein , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich and the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. The artist, who in addition to his stage presence is also active as a lieder, oratorio and concert singer, has so far worked with conductors such as Riccardo Muti , Claudio Abbado , Mariss Jansons , Zubin Mehta , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Lorin Maazel , Seiji Ozawa , Gianandrea Noseda , Daniel Barenboim , James Conlon , Antonio Pappano and Daniele Gatti together. Among the directors the artist has worked with are names like Franco Zeffirelli , Woody Allen , Peter Stein , Graham Vick , Willy Decker , Deborah Warner , Luca Ronconi , Kasper Holten , David McVicar , Ferzan Ozpetek , Mario Martone , Michael Haneke , Robert Carsen as well as Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann.

He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2004 as Nemorino ( L'elisir d'amore ) and later sang roles there such as Alfredo ( La traviata ), Duca ( Rigoletto ) and Don Ottavio ( Don Giovanni ) . In 2008 he sang Rodolfo in La Bohème im Hochhaus , a Swiss television production in a residential area in collaboration with the Bern City Theater . In November 2009 he made his debut as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and in May 2010 as Alfredo in La traviata at the Royal Opera House in London. In 2011 he was Tamino in a production of The Magic Flute at La Scala in Milan . In Verdi -Year 2013, he returned as Alfredo in La traviata alongside Plácido Domingo returned to the Metropolitan Opera. In February 2016 he could be seen as Alfredo in a worldwide cinema broadcast from the Royal Opera House. The singer also performed his solo album Il Mio Canto on a concert tour that took him to New York, Tokyo, Berlin, Vienna, Paris and Florence, among others .

In 2014 he was granted Italian citizenship by the then Italian President Giorgio Napolitano .
