The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is a Roman Catholic College of the Arts. It is the oldest Catholic college for women in the United States.

history

Mother Théodore Guérin arrived with her companions on October 22, 1840 in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods . There she built a girls' school. The first students were admitted in July 1841. As early as 1846, a state charter was issued that allowed the college to award academic honors and degrees. In 1899 the school awarded the first Bachelor of Arts . It was the first women's college to offer courses in journalism. With the expansion of career opportunities for women, it offered courses in IT, business administration, nursing, psychology and animal science. Distance learning was introduced in 1973. Today degrees are awarded in over 30 major subjects. Since 2005, men have been allowed to take part in the distance learning courses and in 2015 this was extended to all courses.
