Sakar ( Bulgarian Сакар ) is a small mountain range in southeastern Bulgaria ( Thrace ). This dome-shaped elevation has the summit Wischegrad ( 856  m ) as its highest point . Sakar lies between the Maritsa , Tundscha , Sokolnitsa and Saslijka rivers . The lowest point at the foot of the mountain is only 45  m high. The road from Topolowgrad to Svilengrad runs through the Sakar Mountains .

The mountains have been inhabited since ancient times. The region has the largest population of birds of prey in Bulgaria that are affected by extinction.

The Sweti Troiza Monastery is a cultural monument in this region. The main administrative center of the region is Topolovgrad. Until the 1990s, the region was very isolated and economically underdeveloped.

The mountain range has given its name to Sakar Peak , a mountain on Livingston Island in Antarctica , since 2005 .
