Sakari Kukko

Sakari Kukko (born July 8, 1953 in Kajaani ) is a Finnish jazz musician .

Live and act

Kukko, who first appeared as a singer and took piano lessons from the age of seven, then learned to play guitar, flute and saxophone, studied at the Sibelius Academy . first played in the band of Jukka Tolonen and in the Tapiola Big Band and the Ogeli Big Band . In 1974 he founded the folk jazz band Piirpauke , with whom he performed successfully at international festivals in the following decades and recorded numerous albums. He also worked as a guest soloist in other jazz groups, such as Edward Vesala , Heikki Sarmanto , but also in world music , such as Aster Aweke or Étoile de Dakar .

On the tenor sax in particular , Kukko has developed his own style, "balanced between the powerful, overblown outbursts of Gato Barbieri and the yearning complaints of Jan Garbarek ."

In 1976 Kukko received the Georgie Award .
