Salvatore "Totò" Schillaci (born December 1, 1964 in Palermo , Sicily ) is a former Italian football player . He gained particular fame by scoring six of his seven international goals at the 1990 World Cup in his own country, which earned him the Golden Shoe as the tournament's top scorer and the tournament's best player award.

Career

Totò Schillaci made his professional debut in the 1982/83 season with FC Messina . In the 1989/90 season he moved to Juventus Turin , where he won the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup under Dino Zoff . His achievements earned him a nomination for the World Cup squad.

With his goals at the World Cup, Schillaci paved the way for Italy to reach the semi-finals, in which they failed on penalties against Argentina . In the match for third place against England , Schillaci secured the top scorer's crown in the 85th minute with a penalty that was converted to a 2-1 final score. Schillaci was voted the best player of the tournament.

After his highly acclaimed performance at the World Cup, Schillaci moved to Inter Milan two years later , but where his performance deteriorated. In 1994 the striker left Italy for Japan for Júbilo Iwata , becoming the first Italian in the J. League . He finally ended his career in 1997.

In May 2008 Salvatore Schillaci returned again and played the last game of Eccellenza Pugliese for Leonessa Altamura , who had lost all 33 games by then. However, he could not save the club from losing the last game of the season.
