Samer ( Flemish : Sint-Wulmaars ) is a French municipality with 4496 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . Samer belongs to the arrondissement of Boulogne-sur-Mer and the canton of Desvres .

geography

Samer is located about 16 kilometers southeast of Boulogne-sur-Mer on the Liane River and is part of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Regional Nature Park . Samer is surrounded by the neighboring communities Questrecques in the north, Wierre-au-Bois in the north and northeast, Longfossé in the northeast, Doudeauville in the east and southeast, Lacres and Tingry in the south, Verlincthun in the southwest and Carly in the west and northwest.

The former route nationale 1 (today's D901) runs through the municipality .

history

During the Second World War, there was an airfield between Samer and Wierre au Bois , which the British Expeditionary Force had created. Later, during the Battle of Britain , Wierre au Bois, as the place was also called, became the base of operations for German Bf 109E fighters from the staff and II. Group of Jagdgeschwader 3 in August / September 1940 .
