Samschtig-Jass

Samschtig-Jass ( Swiss German for "Saturday-Jass") is a television program on Swiss radio and television in which the Swiss national card game Jass is played. As an offshoot there is the show Donnschtig-Jass (“Thursday Jass”). Samschtig-Jass is the oldest entertainment program still broadcast in Europe and is considered one of the most successful television programs in Switzerland and runs every second Saturday from 6:45 p.m. to 7:20 p.m. on SRF 1 .

Emergence

Samschtig-Jass was invented in 1968 by Kurt Felix as the first interactive television format in Switzerland and moderated until 1969. At that time the program was called Stöck – Wys – Stich . The name refers to a widespread order of scoring in Jassen: Stock (king and queen / upper) before white before stitch . In 1972 the format was given its current name.

In the early years, at the end of the program, a short scene was recorded in front of the fictional restaurant Zum schwarzen Egge . The three Cabaret-Rotstift actors Jürg Randegger , Werner von Aesch and Heinz Lüthi argued about a Jass problem after a Jass evening, which was then resolved. This running joke later found with the number The Zähtuusigscht also input into the program Mues sii that! from Cabaret Rotstift. The three aged actors were supposed to rehearse a particularly good sketch for the fictional ten thousandth episode of Samschtig-Jass, which they couldn't manage due to various age-related defects.

content

The central part of the program is three rounds of Jass. Prominent and non-prominent studio guests as well as a telephone candidate who can win 16,000 Swiss francs take part in the card game. The moderator plays the phone candidate's cards. Differential players are played with German-Swiss and French hands .

From 1975 to 1999, Jürg Randegger moderated the show. He was replaced by Monika Fasnacht , who presented the format until 2017. In April 2017 it was announced that Reto Scherrer will be the new moderator in late summer 2017. He is replacing Monika Fasnacht after more than eighteen years. In September 2019, SRF announced that Reto Scherrer would hand over the moderation of the program by January 2020. Fabienne Bamert will succeed him .

Until 1990 Gottfried “Göpf” Egg acted as referee and expert . His successor from 1991 to 2011 was Ernst Marti. In 2012, the bank employee Dani Müller, who was also present at the Donnschtig-Jass, took over the post of referee. Because of the time required, he handed this post over to the former king of wrestling, Jörg Abderhalden, in the summer of 2018 .

Artists from the field of folk music appear as a supporting program .

Donnschtig-Jass

From July to August (six to seven programs) the Donnschtig-Jass is broadcast on Thursdays from 8:05 p.m. In this, communities compete against each other and play to host the next broadcast.

The show moderated by Jürg Randegger was only planned for one year, but continued because of its great success. Originally broadcast on Wednesday, it was called Wednesday Jass and was postponed to Thursday in 1992. The jury was in a train carriage. Starting in 1989, the show was hosted for two seasons by Randegger's Cabaret-Rotstift colleague Werner von Aesch . In 1991 Urs Kliby took over the show and from then on jassed in a Postbus . From 1996 Monika Fasnacht moderated the show, now jetting took place in a tent. From 2011 to 2018 Roman Kilchsperger hosted the program, assisted by Reto Scherrer. In summer 2019, Rainer Maria Salzgeber took over the moderation. The new sidekick was Stefan Büsser . Since then Sonia Kälin has been a referee .

Due to the Corona situation, the Donnschtig-Jass did not take a tour through Switzerland in 2020. Instead, the live broadcasts were produced in the Ballenberg open-air museum . A total of twelve families competed against each other on seven evenings.

Oddities

  • Originally it was suggested that the “telephone jasser” would play along from home. In fact, he's sitting in an adjoining room at the location, wearing headphones with a microphone.
  • To better differentiate for the audience, the SRF Jass broadcasts play with a custom-made French Jass card . The usual colors red and black were supplemented with blue (corner) and green (cross) for the broadcast. The color stays red for heart and black for shovel.
