Samuel Crompton (born December 3, 1753 in Firwood Fold , near Bolton in England , † June 26, 1827 in Bolton) was a British inventor and invented the spinning mule in 1779 .

Life

Crompton started spinning in Bolton at the age of 15. Since the threads were quite thin at that time and often broke, he secretly developed a new machine over the next five years in his spare time, which is a combination of the Spinning Jenny and the Waterframe .

During the industrial revolution , the increase in world exports through the industrial production of spinning contributed considerably to England's prosperity. Crompton himself, however, could not afford a patent , so that the industry was soon copying his invention en masse without paying him in full the tax payments to which the interested parties had committed. Throughout his life he fought for recognition for his work. Parliament awarded him a donation of £ 5,000 on June 24, 1812 . With the money he received, he got involved in a bleaching factory, which after initial success had to be auctioned in 1819.

In 1791 Crompton had joined the Swedenborgian Church , which he served as treasurer and until 1823 as choirmaster .

Crompton died at the age of 73. The statement often made in the literature that he died impoverished is not entirely accurate. Although he had only a modest income, he was able to secure his livelihood adequately in the last years of his life. Contributing to this was a £ 63 pension that friends of his had funded without his knowledge.

Honors

On September 24, 1862, a statue of Crompton was unveiled in front of 10,000 spectators in Nelson Square in Bolton. This was the first public statue in Bolton. The occasion was accompanied by 23 music formations.
