San Benedetto in Polirone

Polirone Abbey was a Benedictine monastery in San Benedetto Po in the province of Mantua and the region of Lombardy .

history

The Monastery of San Benedetto in Polirone was founded in 1007 by Tedald von Canossa on an island that the Po River formed here at that time; today one of the river arms has been drained.

Mathilde transferred the abbey in 1077 to Pope Gregory VII , to whom it was subordinate to the Cluny Abbey . Mathilde chose Polirone as her final resting place. Mathilde made twelve donations to the abbey in the last five years. This made Polirone one of the richest monasteries in Italy. Pope Urban VIII had her bones transferred to Rome in 1630. Her remains were initially stored in the Castel Sant'Angelo . After completing the marble sarcophagus and statue, Mathilde found her final resting place in St. Peter's Basilica in 1644 .

The abbey church, with the rank of minor basilica , was rebuilt in the middle of the 15th century and restored by Giulio Romano from 1540 to 1544 . Other artists who have worked here are Antonio da Correggio and Antonio Begarelli .

The monastery was closed in 1797.
