Edition of the San Francisco Examiner

The San Francisco Examiner is an American daily newspaper in San Francisco , California that has appeared there since 1865.

Initially the newspaper was called The Daily Examiner . William Randolph Hearst took over the sheet in 1887 from his father George Hearst and gave it its current name. Hearst Junior significantly increased the circulation of the examiner , not least because he managed to win over important authors such as Ambrose Bierce , Mark Twain and Jack London for the paper. In addition, there was a heavy dose of tabloid journalism . Hearst also gave the Examiner a graphic touch by focusing more on illustrations, caricatures and comics.

In 2000, Ted Fang took over the Examiner from Hearst Corporation . Since then, numerous places on the sheet have been cut and the print format has been reduced. In 2004 Philip Anschutz bought the newspaper and the associated printing company. Since then, the Examiner has been distributed as a free newspaper .
