San Juan de la Maguana is the capital and with about 79,000 inhabitants (as of 2018) the largest city in the province of San Juan in the west of the Dominican Republic .
location
The city is located in the center of the San Juan Valley with the central Cordillera Central mountain range to the north and east and the Sierra de Neiba to the south. There are a number of low hills to the west. The Rio San Juan is the main river in the region, the city was founded on the east side of this river.
history
San Juan de la Maguana was founded in 1503 by Diego Velázquez and was one of the first cities on the island of Hispaniola . Their name is derived from " San Juan Bautista" and the Taíno name of the valley, "Maguana".
The town's original residents were Creole, Spanish, German, Dutch, Haitian, and Arab ancestry. From December 1508, a coat of arms was awarded to each of the cities founded on the island in Seville, Spain . During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city was a trade bridge between Haiti and the rest of the island.
On December 22, 1855, the Battle of Santomé took place between the Dominican army under General José María Cabral and the Haitian army under the leadership of Emperor Faustino Solouque, with the Dominicans victorious.
economy
The main economic activities in the province have been livestock and agriculture since colonial times . Mainly cereals and pulses such as beans, rice, corn, peanuts and peas are grown.

The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is an impressive historic building in the city.
There are many squares and parks in the city, such as Jose Maria Cabral Park, Caonabo Park, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Park, and Plaza Anacaona. San Juan de Maguana, known as the "City of Wizards", is heavily influenced by the beliefs of the growing number of Haitians who practice Voodoo .
