San Salvador de Jujuy is the capital of the northernmost province of Jujuy and with over 400,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area one of the larger cities in Argentina .

geography

Jujuy is located at the confluence of the Río Xibi Xibi and the Río Grande de Jujuy in a basin at 1238 m on the eastern edge of the Andes . The terrain in the area is hilly and covered by forest, the climate is subtropical, warm and humid in summer and cool and dry in winter.

In addition to the actual city (230,000 inhabitants), Groß-Jujuy also includes the densely populated Palpalá district and some smaller towns in the area. The cities of El Carmen , Monterrico , San Antonio , Perico and San Pedro belong to the enlarged metropolitan area .

The distance to the Argentine capital Buenos Aires is about 1600 kilometers.

history

The city was founded for the first time in 1565 by the Spanish colonizers coming from what is now Peru , but soon afterwards it was destroyed by the Indians, so that it had to be rebuilt twice. Jujuy was founded by Velazco in 1592. Francisco de Argañaris was finally able to establish himself here in 1593 . Numerous buildings from the colonial era have been preserved in the center.

At the end of the 19th century, the city had 5,000 residents who traded lively with Bolivia and Chile, exporting cattle, mules, chicha brandy, fruit, hides, salt and gold dust. At that time, a railway connected the city with Buenos Aires .

Over the years Jujuy developed from a base on the way to the Bolivian mines to a modern city.

The 100,000-inhabitant mark was not passed until after 1980. Between 1980 and 2000, it was the fastest growing city in the country.

population

Unlike most parts of Argentina, many of the residents are descendants of various Indian tribes or mestizos. Only around 30 percent are of purely European descent (national average: 85%), which is noticeable in an independent cultural life. The languages Quechua , Aymara and Chiriguano are occasionally spoken.

economy

Above all, Jujuy is an administrative city. The real wealth lies in the surrounding area: in the oil fields northeast of the city, the fertile tobacco growing area near El Carmen (10 km south) and in the sugar industry near Ledesma (Argentina) (80 km northeast). There is also a steel industry in the neighboring city of Palpalá . Trade with the neighboring countries Chile and Bolivia is also important .

Architecture and culture

In Jujuy (this is how the city is called by the locals) there is the Plaza Belgrano with the cathedral of San Salvador de Jujuy in colonial style. In addition, the square was bounded by the government palace and the old town hall (Cabildo). There are a few other old churches in the city itself. But they are all similar to the cathedral.

A little outside the city on the Río Reyes river , in the midst of high mountains, are the royal springs "Termas de Reyes". The water is warm and rich in minerals and there is the possibility of bathing in it. There are bus connections to the place and the viewpoints in the area are within walking distance.

Jujuy is also the gateway to the Quebrada de Humahuaca , a canyon that leads to Humahuaca and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003 .
