Alexandre Rosell i Feliu (born March 6, 1964 in Barcelona ), known as Sandro Rosell , is an entrepreneur in the field of sports, especially football, and was President of FC Barcelona until the beginning of 2014 .

career

Rosell is a graduate of ESADE , a Spanish private university, from which he graduated with an MBA . At the beginning of his entrepreneurial career, he worked in the marketing department for the 1992 Summer Olympics and for Nike .

In 2003, Rosell supported Joan Laporta's candidacy for president of FC Barcelona . Laporta won by an overwhelming majority. His election promise was a commitment to David Beckham . In addition, Rosell led the negotiations as vice president in the area of sports. However, Beckham preferred to join arch-rivals Real Madrid . Barcelona instead signed aspiring Brazilian player Ronaldinho from Paris Saint-Germain .

In 2005, Rosell resigned as vice president of FC Barcelona - despite winning the Spanish championship in the same year. He criticized the "lack of independence, transparency and democracy" and described Laporta as the problem.

When Barça won the Champions League in 2006, he caused a stir with his recently published book Benvingut al món real (Welcome to the Real World), in which he indirectly criticized Joan Laporta. He could have run against Laporta in the presidential election, but ultimately decided not to. On June 13, 2010, he entered the election for President of FC Barcelona with the motto “We are Barça” and won with 61.35 percent of the vote. None of its 38 predecessors received more votes. He replaced Joan Laporta on July 1, 2010, who could not be re-elected after two terms in office.

In January 2014, the newspaper El Mundo reported that the transfer of the player Neymar from FC Santos had been paid much more than the officially stated 57.1 million euros. On January 22, 2014, an embezzlement investigation was launched against Rosell. A day later, he resigned as president of FC Barcelona, so that "the reputation of the club is not damaged by unjustified attacks". Vice President Josep Maria Bartomeu took over the vacant post .

On Tuesday, May 23, 2017, Rosell and his wife and three other suspects were arrested by the Spanish police on charges of money laundering . In addition, the couple's accounts were blocked with a total of 35 million euros. On February 25, 2019, the trial of Rosell began in front of the Audiencia Nacional . He was released from custody two days later, on February 27th.

Others

Rosell was also active as a football player, but only for lower-class teams such as the Segunda División B club at the time, CE l'Hospitalet .
